CHILLIWACK — Uber Canada announced Monday (Sept. 25) that it will expand its ridesharing platform to Agassiz, Mission and what it calls “north of Chilliwack.”

According to a news release from company spokesperson Keerthana Rang, Uber has expanded its platform to even more communities in the Fraser Valley, thereby offering residents and visitors a way to access safe, reliable transportation that the company claims is affordable. The larger Fraser Valley footprint enables Uber drivers to earn more money through more ridesharing opportunities.

The communities of Agassiz and Mission will add a population base of approximately 50,000 to the existing Uber footprint across the Lower Mainland. It is not immediately clear what Uber meant when it wrote “north of Chilliwack” in its press release.

The enhanced service area provided by Uber reads like a cell phone coverage map from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver all the way east to Seabird Island.

Uber’s utilization by the public rose during the recent transit strike that sidelined BC Transit buses between Abbotsford and Hope.

Back in June, Uber announced the arrival of its ridesharing platform in Chilliwack at a time when the transit strike had lasted nearly three months and the BC government could not successfully resolve it up to that point.

Uber made its Chilliwack debut on Tuesday, June 6.

“Tomorrow’s launch is a testament to the hard work, collaborative efforts and support received from stakeholders!” the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce wrote on Facebook back in June. “Chilliwack has had many user groups and community partners advocating for this for some time now and to see it come to reality is exciting!”
