VANCOUVER — Vibrant colors, melodies, and an air of excitement filled the small town of Quesnel as BC Culture Days was officially launched Saturday (Sept. 23). The event, a celebration of arts, culture, and heritage, has planned events in communities across the province through October 16.

Lana Popham, the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport, is excited about the arrival of BC Culture Days. “BC Culture Days is an incredible opportunity for everyone to showcase, learn, and experience life enriched by arts and culture,” she said. “We are proud to proclaim BC Culture Days and to support communities with free events that celebrate our diverse culture together.”

The opening ceremony, hosted by the Quesnel and District Community Arts Council, served as an introduction for the three-week celebration. The day was filled with art activities and entertainment. The festivities were not limited to Quesnel, as BC Culture Days boasts a network of over 450 events, presentations, interactive activities, and workshops that showcase British Columbia’s rich cultural landscape.

BC Culture Days is brought to life by the Society to Bridge Arts and Community, an organization closely affiliated with the BC Alliance for Arts and Culture, thanks to a generous $70,000 grant from the provincial government. A dedicated provincial volunteer task force, steering committee, and numerous community, arts, and cultural organizations and municipalities work tirelessly to provide free arts and cultural activities throughout the province.

A particularly exciting aspect of BC Culture Days is the appointment of emerging artists as ambassadors. This year, ten talented artists have been selected to participate in a mentorship program that will help them hone their artistic skills and organize public activities with a thematic focus on AIR (access, inclusion, and resilience). Their contributions promise to add a unique and meaningful dimension to the celebrations.

“As Culture Days unfolds across B.C. and nationwide over the next three weeks, we encourage people to engage with the free arts and culture events on offer,” said David Pensato, Chair of the Culture Days national board of directors. “Together, we can celebrate our country’s diversity and creative spirit, and highlight the central role that artists, creators and cultural organizations play in each of our communities.”

As BC Culture Days continues to unfold over the coming weeks, communities all over British Columbia will have the opportunity to come together, celebrate their cultural diversity, and appreciate the transformative power of art and culture. It’s a time for creativity to flourish and for residents to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of the province’s heritage.

A list of events in the Fraser Valley and across B.C. is available from the Culture Days website.
