Chilliwack Fire dispatched after excavator reportedly clips gas line in downtown Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — Three engines (1, 1-2 and 4) from the Chilliwack Fire Department have been dispatched to the 46000 block of Victoria Avenue in downtown Chilliwack after an excavator reportedly clipped a one-inch service main line around noon Monday (Sept. 11).

According to scanner traffic, an excavator reportedly hit a gas line, resulting in gas flowing from the clipped service main line. There is reportedly a strong smell of gas in the air in the area.

Chilliwack Fire has blocked two nearby intersections.

Emergency dispatch had been asked by Chilliwack Fire to get an expected time of arrival from FortisBC; Fortis arrived on scene at approximately 12:22 p.m.

Engine 4 has been cleared from the scene at around 12:26 p.m.

Engine 1 cleared at 12:34 p.m.

Fortis flaggers have taken control of the scene from Chilliwack Fire Department personnel at approximately 12:34 p.m.

Fraser Valley Today has reached out to the Chilliwack Fire Department for additional comment.

Today’s incident marks the second time in three weeks that an excavator has struck a gas line. Back on August 21, FortisBC and Chilliwack Fire Department personnel were dispatched to Commercial Court near Eagle Landing Monday afternoon after an excavator reportedly hit a gas line at, or near, a construction site.
