Updated: Chilliwack Fire says blaze at 75-year-old church under investigation

CHILLIWACK — Multiple Chilliwack Fire Department engines and personnel were dispatched on Labour Day Monday afternoon (Sept. 4) after a fire broke out at Cross Connection Church, 9310 Williams Street, in Chilliwack.

Firefighters spent several hours hour tackling the two-alarm blaze, deploying a ladder to attack flames on the roof of the older church.

The fire broke out sometime after 2:30 p.m. Monday and attracted several engines and units. RCMP attended the scene as well.

The roof of the heritage-style church reportedly collapsed and is gone, according to a witness at the scene.

BC Ambulance Service attended the scene. A first responder was reportedly injured during the fire, according to scanner traffic. This has not been confirmed by authorities.

Firefighters are reportedly in overhaul as of 4:51 p.m. However, Chilliwack firefighters are still on scene as of 7 p.m. There are unconfirmed reports the structure is unstable and will need to be razed. An excavator is reported to be on scene and working to demolish the church, according to Louanne Letkeman, a witness at the scene of the fire.

As of 8 p.m., there is still smoke emanating from the building and fire personnel remain on scene, witnesses say.

On Tuesday morning, Chilliwack Fire Department issued a press release indicating the fire is under investigation.

Main Street Church posted a message on its Facebook account at 5:09 p.m. Monday afternoon, asking for prayer for Cross Connection’s pastor and the congregation, accompanied by a picture of the fire impacting the church building.

“Please pray for pastor Rob and his congregation at Cross Connections Church. Lord, grant them peace and guidance during this time,” Main Street Church wrote on Facebook.

The church has roots dating back to the 1940s when it started with 22 charter members in 1941. On September 6, 1947, two lots were purchased at the corner of Princess Avenue and Williams Street to build the current church.
