CHILLIWACK — BC Transit says handyDART riders in the Chilliwack and Central Fraser Valley regional transit systems will soon have new technology to help them book, manage and track their trips.

The system will allow riders to book trips by phone, online or through a mobile app. It will also provide access to trip details and real-time bus tracking, allow bookings to be managed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and deliver push notifications and in-app messages with real-time updates.

BC Transit has partnered with the Vancouver-based AI company Spare to deliver the new technology. The changes are expected to create a simpler, faster and more flexible booking experience for riders and caregivers.

In a news release, BC Transit says the changes are designed will reduce the need for riders to wait on hold to book, cancel or check a trip. Family members and caregivers will also be able to help plan trips using the option that works best for them.

The system will also include on-board trip mapping to support operators with route navigation and real-time updates, while providing better data to support future service planning and possible expansion.

BC Transit says riders who prefer to book by phone can continue to do so. There are no changes to eligibility, service hours or service areas.

The soft rollout in Chilliwack and the Central Fraser Valley will help determine when the technology will be introduced to the remaining 26 handyDART systems across British Columbia.

The $5.8 million program is funded by the province and local governments.
