HOPE — Hope Mounties continue to investigate after neighbourly beef led to a now-seized piece, according to the detachment’s biweekly snapshot.

Between August 31 and September 13, investigators say an argument ensued after a motorist reportedly aggravated two bears in a backyard being watched by residents.

The argument escalated into a physical fight between the two parties, and witnesses reported seeing one of them pull out a gun, which a bystander took away before police arrived.

Officers have since seized the firearm believed to be involved.

The incident was one of 316 calls for service police responded to over the two weeks.

During that time, RCMP also responded to another fight near the Hope arena, which saw one man run away after failing to comply with police directions in an attempted arrest.

A woman then intervened during the arrest and ended up causing injury to both herself and an officer.

No witnesses came forward to support the original assault allegation. Alcohol was believed to be a factor in the incident.

“Hope RCMP would like to remind the public not to intervene when police are carrying out their duties,” said RCMP. “Interference can create additional safety risks and may require officers to take action to protect both the public and police.”

Aside from fights, officers also tackled an attempted telecommunications wire theft near the Alexander Bridge, where workers repairing downed wires reported three suspects trying to steal before fleeing into nearby bushes.

RCMP identified all three as residents of other Lower Mainland communities and known to police, with one man initially trying to give a false identity before investigators learned he was wanted on outstanding warrants from elsewhere.

He was arrested and held for court.

Investigation into the attempted theft and subsequent damage is ongoing.
