City of Chilliwack says its public works crews worked all night following latest winter storm

CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack said on Twitter Wednesday that its public works crews have not stopped working on clearing roads ever since the latest winter storm dropped over 20 centimetres of snow throughout the city.

Some areas of Chilliwack were walloped by as much as a foot of snow at higher elevations, while the valley floor saw at least 20 centimetres of snow by Tuesday midday.

According to a posting on Twitter Wednesday morning (Dec. 21), the City of Chilliwack says that its operations personnel have been relentlessly plowing roads and clearing primary arterials.

“Crews worked through the night to clear roads following our Snow and Ice Control policy, and continue to work 24/7,” the City of Chilliwack posted on Twitter. “Please clear sidewalks and street drains. If you must travel, make sure your vehicle is equipped for winter driving conditions.”

The City said on its website that its operations department is responsible for snow and ice control on designated city roads and sidewalks. The safety of citizens and workers, ease of travel for vehicles and pedestrians, public transit and schools zones are just some of the considerations that affect operations during a snow and ice event.

The City works to improve road surface conditions for the travelling public as quickly as possible during or following adverse winter weather conditions. Roads are categorized into four priorities based on the volume of the traffic on the roads, emergency response requirements, hillside access, and other safety related issues. Roads are cleared and maintained as resources are available and in strict priority order. Snow and ice removal from sidewalks is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner and/or tenant.

The underlying goal of snow and ice control operations is to improve driving conditions as much as possible during prevailing winter weather, roads are not cleared down to bare pavement conditions, the city wrote on its website.
