Chilliwack firefighters deployed to Lytton as wildfire grows to 600 hectares

LYTTON — Members of the Chilliwack Fire Department have been deployed to help tackle the Saw Creek wildfire in Lytton – which has now grown sixfold since Friday evening.

“We’re incredibly proud of these firefighters who have stepped forward to assist,” said Chilliwack Fire. “Their willingness to leave home, work in challenging conditions, and support British Colombians reflects the very best of the fire service.”

The members join roughly 130 BC Wildfire Service personnel assigned to the incident, along with Lytton Fire and fellow firefighters from other municipalities.

The latest update from BCWS at 9 a.m. says the fire has grown from 100 to 600 hectares as hot, dry conditions fanned the fuels overnight.

Crews worked to protect structures in the fire area, and efforts continue to secure the perimeter of communities near the incident.

“While temperatures will be a few degrees cooler today, there is still potential for increased fire activity throughout the day,” said BCWS.

Firefighters are establishing control lines along the northwest and south flanks of the fire, while helicopters have been deployed to help with bucketing operations.

The village, which once housed 210 residents, currently has 75 after the 2021 fires that killed two and nearly destroyed the whole community.
