Heavy winds and snow bring whiteout conditions to Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — Old Man Winter returned with a vengeance overnight, dumping at least 15-20 centimetres of snow throughout Chilliwack and Sardis and bringing out whiteout conditions to the Fraser Valley due to heavy winds.

Environment Canada had been calling for at least 15-20 centimetres of snow to fall Monday evening, and their projections came to fruition. Blustery, gusty winds greeted Chilliwack motorists as they cleared out their driveways and dusted layers of snow off their vehicles.

Higher elevations surrounding Chilliwack saw even more snow than the valley floor. Perry Mazurenko, a Ryder Lake resident, estimated his driveway had at least 30 centimeters by Tuesday morning.

The road conditions surrounding Chilliwack were just as formidable as the blowing snow. One Chilliwack resident, Stephanie Kemp, reported on Facebook that she tried to drive from her home near Chilliwack Lake Road to Abbotsford, but turned around and drove back home, despite being an essential worker.

The Chilliwack School District wrote on Twitter Tuesday morning that the Neighbourhood Learning Centre and all community use of its facilities were closed, and an emergency staffing plan was in effect.

The City of Chilliwack wrote on Twitter earlier this week that due to the extreme cold weather, green carts would not be collected this week. However, garbage, recycling, and glass will still be collected.

Despite the winter fun that snow normally brings for kids who are out on Christmas break from SD33 schools, temperatures will still remain frigid from Tuesday through Thursday. Daytime temps will only approach -11 today, and dip to a miserable -16 overnight. Wednesday will see temperatures drop to a eye-watering -14, before warming up to a balmy mark of 1 Celsius by Friday.

However, winter isn’t going away anytime soon. More snow is in the forecast for Thursday night and Friday morning, according to Environment Canada.
