CHILLIWACK – Multiple Chilliwack RCMP members attended a Little Mountain neighbourhood Sunday night where a man suffered exposure to pepper spray.

Chilliwack firefighters were paged at 9:22 p.m. for a pepper spray and decontamination incident in the 46800 block of Portage Avenue. The initial page advised firefighters that a patient was in and out of consciousness. Firefighters attended and later radioed emergency dispatch to say the patient was seizing.

BC EHS paramedics arrived and the patient was left in care of medical professionals.

According to a statement from Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener, police were called to the 46800 block of Portage Avenue Sunday night at approximately 9 p.m.

Cpl. Kiener says the man was treated medically before being arrested.

“This was an isolated incident and there was no risk to the public,” Cpl. Kiener said. “No charges are being laid at this time, and the man was released from police custody once he was sober.”

A Facebook user named Aric Froese said, “Man with a starving pitbull under the influence of something on the Little Mountain Elementary playground. Some youths were trying to help him and call 911 and he was getting all mouthy. RCMP responded and followed the man off the school grounds; he turned and got aggressive and they pepper sprayed and arrested him.”

The statement from police did not immediately address online claims about the nature of the incident.

The police presence is not connected to an incident on Friday when 14 people were assessed by paramedics after what emergency officials call a “hazmat incident” at a park on Portage Avenue, just west of where Sunday night’s incident occurred.

In that incident, BC Emergency Health Services said three ambulances and a supervisor were called to Portage Park at around 11 a.m. on Friday.

After being assessed, no one was taken to the hospital.

The Chilliwack Progress reported that children at a nearby daycare were exposed to chemical residue from a pepper-spray incident in the park the night before. People were seen being treated while sitting on the ground.
