HOPE — Search-and-rescue crews in Hope say they’ve helped two callers in need during the stat holiday this past Wednesday (Sept. 30).

During the afternoon, Hope Volunteer Search and Rescue say a man was hiking with his dog down the Flatiron, next to Needle Peak, when his Achilles tore “for no apparent reason”.

He made his way to the cairn splitting the two trails but couldn’t make the steep hike down because of the pain. Hope SAR then rescued the man with help from Valley Helicopters.

“The only complication was calming his dog enough to load it in the helicopter,” said the group. “We are always glad that mountains like Flatiron/Needle make rescue easy with a helicopter extraction and we hope this gentleman and his K9 friend are able to return to the mountains soon.”

Crews later received a call at the end of the day, when a dad and his two kids got stuck while driving up a forest service road with no cell service, leading them to hike for four hours before they could call for help.

“They were cold and exhausted when we reached them,” Hope SAR added.

With most areas around Hope not having phone service, the SAR is urging local travellers to use communicators like an inReach or a Zoleo, as well as to let a trusted person know where they’re going and an estimated return time – even when travelling by car.
