CHILLIWACK – With roughly three weeks until the provincial election, and the candidate deadline fast approaching, it appears the Chilliwack North riding could have three candidates representing the Conservatives, NDP and CentreBC.

According to the Elections BC website containing a list of accepted candidates for provincial ridings, Adila Shaukat is listed as the NDP candidate for Chilliwack North.

Shaukat’s financial agent is listed as Umar Muhktar.

As of Friday night at 9:30 p.m., Adila Shaukat’s name was not listed on the BC NDP’s website containing its full roster of candidates for the Chilliwack North riding.

Heather Maahs is listed on the Elections BC website as the B.C. Conservative Party candidate, while attorney Dan Grice is listed as the CentreBC candidate.

A spokesperson for OneBC told Fraser Valley Today earlier this week that it will not run a candidate from the party in the Chilliwack North riding. However, OneBC spokesperson Wyatt Claypool told Fraser Valley Today that it does plan to have a candidate in the Chilliwack-Cultus Lake riding.

Elections BC points out on its website that the list of candidates currently available on its website does not show all candidates that have publicly declared that they are running. It only shows nominations that have been accepted by Elections BC.

Elections BC says candidates endorsed by registered political parties will have their party affiliation listed next to their name on the ballot. The provincial agency says candidates may also choose to run as unaffiliated, with no party listed next to their name, or as an independent, with the word “Independent” listed next to their name.

The final list of candidates and their party affiliations (if applicable) will be available after nominations close on Saturday, October 3 at 1 p.m. (Pacific time).

Maahs won the riding in resounding fashion in October 2024 by receiving over 54 per cent of the vote.

As an independent candidate, Grice received 2.3 per cent of the vote tally in the Chilliwack North riding two years ago.
