Police tackle trouble from out-of-towners in Mission: RCMP Community Connection

MISSION — The RCMP’s latest weekly round-up says local Mounties were paged out to more than 360 calls for service last week, but not all of them involved Mission residents.

On August 3, a man from Burnaby took his family to Hayward Lake and found the parking lot full, but realized that a grey Honda Civic was taking up two stalls.

He then tried to ask the other driver to move. The other driver, who was from Surrey, said he had been saving the second spot for his own family.

This sparked an argument that led to one man reportedly filming the other with his phone, and police say the Burnaby driver “became upset” that police did not arrive immediately.

“Mission RCMP remind the public that all calls are responded to in priority order, and as much as we can empathize with how frustrating that situation must have been, parking complaints often take a back-seat to more urgent matters,” said Mission RCMP.

The following evening, on August 4, police say a witness reported that one person from a group of six men had been shooting a handgun a few kilometres up the Lost Creek Forest Service Road.

The group was allegedly involved with a white Chrysler 300, which police stopped, but found only three occupants inside – none of whom matched the witness’s description.

A search revealed a box of shotgun shells and no firearms.

RCMP say the occupants were all from Surrey and had been warned that no shooting was allowed on Lost Creek FSR.

The person involved in firing the gun had not been found.

Mission RCMP had been cracking down on illegal shooting in the area throughout the summer.

Recreational shooting is not permitted within 400 metres of FSRs in the Sylvester and Lost Creek areas, with violators potentially facing a $690 ticket, having their guns seized, and facing criminal charges.
