Merritt orders closure of forested areas near city limits

MERRITT, B.C. — Merritt’s fire chief has ordered all forested areas along the periphery of the city to be closed for the next month.

City officials said the closure will remain in place until Sept. 15, 2026 when conditions will be reassessed and the measure possibly lifted.

“The closure prohibits all unauthorized access to affected forested areas and trails, including, but not limited to areas above the Bench, Lookout Road (Flagpole), Collettville, Windy Canyon and the access to trails above Exit 286 that are within the City,” said city officials.

“The public is asked to respect this closure and refrain from entering these areas until further notice.”

Extreme wildfire risk in the region seems to be the reason behind the closure, as officials cited Bylaw 2389, which outlines the authority of Merritt’s Fire Rescue Department and its chief.

“The Fire Chief may close areas where they believe hazardous conditions of the forest cover or the occurrence or spread of fire in any Forest endanger life or property in any area within the City,” reads the bylaw.

“No persons may enter or be in the closed area for any purpose without specific authorization of the Fire Chief. No operations of any class specified in the Order may be carried on within the closed area.”
