CHILLIWACK – For the second time this year, a community event meant to teach families and kids how to plant and grow their own food has sold out, underscoring growing interest in healthy, locally grown crops.

Chilliwack resident Debbie Walker from PR firm Translucent Publicity tells Fraser Valley Today the container gardening event held on Saturday, November 8 at Fantasy Farms in Chilliwack attracted another capacity crowd. The event is part of the Oasis Gardening Initiative.

“This event sold out again, demonstrating the need for us to grow together, eliminating food insecurity for kids and their families,” Walker said.

The container gardening event was designed to educate and jump start food security programs geared towards students ages 5-12 years of age.

Walker says she connected at the event with “some amazing teachers” in SD33 to help her move the container gardening program forward and hopefully fill monthly events from March through October.

Walker plans to partner with stakeholders to present the basics on how to plant and harvest.

“A full curriculum will be created so we can reach out to as many families as possible,” she said.

Amid demand for so many hamper, pantry and backpack programs throughout the Fraser Valley, Walker said she wanted to find solutions to eliminate the need for food supports.

“In this day and age, and while we are located in one of the most fertile sections of the Province, it is unacceptable to continue to function in this manner, and let’s get children excited about the ability to supplement food sources by growing container gardens,” she said.
