CASTLEGAR — BC Highway Patrol officers are investigating a fatal collision between a snow plow dump truck and a Kia SUV that resulted in the death of an 8-year-old boy just outside Castlegar over the weekend.

According to a statement from BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin, police are asking for witnesses and dashcam video to help learn exactly what happened.

The fatal collision occurred on Saturday morning, Dec. 7 shortly after 8 a.m. on Highway 3 outside Castlegar. Road conditions were cold and icy with freezing rain, Cpl. McLaughlin said.

Police say a pedestrian received life-altering injuries when he was hit by the Kia after it spun away from the dump truck. The pedestrian, a 57-year-old Castlegar man, stopped to assist an unrelated vehicle that drove into a ditch Saturday morning.

“We are looking for dash camera video or people who may have seen the green Kia, or the yellow snowplow dump truck in the moments leading up to the crash,” said Cpl. McLaughlin. “BC Highway Patrol has already spoken to multiple witnesses, but for obvious reasons we want to make sure we investigate thoroughly.”

The boy who died was in the green Kia SUV with his five-year-old brother, and the boys’ 44-year-old stepfather who was driving. Both the stepfather and brother reported minor physical injuries. The family lives in the Nelson area.

The driver of the snowplow dump truck, a 65-year-old man from the Castlegar area, appears to be unhurt.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Nelson BC Highway Patrol at 250-354-5180.
