CHILLIWACK — It didn’t take long for Chilliwack resident Steve Roukema to find a new home after serving as the executive director of Chilliwack Restorative Justice for the past three years.

M2W2, a non-profit that provides support services and community reintegration to Fraser Valley inmates in correctional facilities, announced Wednesday it has hired Roukema as its next executive director.

Roukema has been married for 21 years to his wife Janna. Together they have five children ages 8-20. In addition to his former role at Chilliwack Restorative Justice, which announced his departure at the beginning of November, Roukema has previously worked as a youth pastor in Chilliwack and Abbotsford, and as a missionary in training in Mexico.

“A lot of my work goes back to my love for youth and families and providing options for them to live healthy and fulfilling lives. As an executive leader, I hope my involvement will allow me to provide further insight as to the impact and need your communities have for the services of M2W2,” he said. “I also hope to learn from M2W2 staff, volunteers, and the individuals and families affected by incarceration.”

Roukema’s position will begin effective January 1. He succeeds interim executive director Phil Routly.

M2W2 furnishes a prison mentorship program that brings companionship and an outside perspective to individuals in correctional facilities, according to its website.

“These relationships provide a safe space for trust to grow and healing to occur,” M2W2 said.

M2W2 operates Hidden Treasures Thrift Store at 45923 Airport Road in Chilliwack. Individuals on parole, work release or escorted temporary absence can gain employment experience alongside store staff and volunteers. Store proceeds help support M2W2.
