YOUR PERSPECTIVE: NDP’s session of stumbles

Dec 6, 2023 | 7:55 AM

As the fall legislative session in Victoria comes to a close it’s hard not to be disappointed with David Eby.

In a time when over half of British Columbians are $200 or less away from not being able to pay their bills at the end of the month, we were hoping to see some meaningful legislation that brings reprieve from everyday challenges. Instead, we were left with poor governance and even more poorly thought-out legislation.

The final weeks of the fall session showcased the NDP’s blatant disregard for parliamentary democracy as the NDP continued its trend of introducing significant pieces of legislation at the end of session, without giving people adequate time to debate it. This is legislation that will impact your daily life.

As part of the Official Opposition, it is our job to scrutinize bills and ensure that what is being passed into law serves the needs of all British Columbians. But we didn’t get a chance to do that, and debate was shut down entirely while sweeping changes were made with minimal scrutiny, debate, or accountability.

The NDP’s failures aren’t limited to their lack of respect for our democratic institutions — they extend to virtually every issue on the minds of British Columbians.

Last month, our BC United Caucus exposed the NDP’s CleanBC scheme, which will cost British Columbians and further harm our economy.

According to the government’s own data, the ‘Cost BC’ plan will shrink the economy by $28 billion over the next 10 years, kill over 200,000 jobs, and reduce household incomes by $11,000 per family per year. Food bank visits are already at record highs — this money needs to be left in people’s pockets to cover the rising costs of gas, groceries, and housing.

The NDP’s results on healthcare are not any better. Six months ago, after failing to deliver timely life-saving cancer care in B.C., the NDP made a plan to send over 50 cancer patients a week to the United States for treatment. Government documents have recently revealed that the NDP is sending an average of only 12 patients a week to the U.S. That is less than a quarter of the patients the NDP promised they would help.

On the public safety file, revelations came forward that the NDP has been using taxpayer money to fund a group that has openly admitted to trafficking drugs off the dark web into B.C. Our caucus has repeatedly called on the NDP to launch a forensic audit into how these funds were approved, unfortunately, the NDP has refused to do so.

In contrast to the NDP’s failures, our BC United Caucus introduced a wave of common sense policies to provide immediate relief to British Columbians. Including our commitment to permanently eliminate the provincial fuel tax and remove the carbon tax on all home heating fuels.

Additionally, we will scrap the NDP’s ‘CostBC’ plan and replace it with sensible measures that will grow the economy while reducing global emissions.

This session proved once again that David Eby and the NDP are unable to deliver the tangible results British Columbians need and deserve

Meanwhile, our BC United Caucus has a bold vision to make life more affordable and deliver a bright future for all of B.C.
