Young Mission man faces ‘numerous’ charges after running from police while strapped with bladed weapons: RCMP

The suspect was allegedly seen reaching for his waistband. Police later found a hatchet tucked into one side of his pants, with a knife on the other.

His backpack was also found to have gloves, a mask and bear spray.

Mission RCMP have recommended charges of uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and obstructing a peace officer as a result of this incident.

Police dealt with another runner only a couple days prior.

A neighbour called in at 1 p.m. that day after seeing a man with a backpack hop a security fence and go into a house that had recently been vacant due to a fire.

The man scaled the fence and ran off when officers pulled up.

A handler-canine duo from the Lower Mainland police dog unit later tracked the man into an area of heavy brush. The dog “took hold” of one of his arms until officers could handcuff him.

RCMP says he was not seriously injured and did not need to go to hospital, so he was taken to jail instead.

The backpack was found carrying a number of tools typically used to break into various locations.

“The 31-year-old Mission man is also facing an additional charge of breaching a Release Order from a previous offence, which specifically required him not to possess certain break and enter tools.”

Mission RCMP responded to a total of 336 calls for service in the detachment’s round-up for the week of April 13 to April 19.
