ABBOTSFORD — A manslaughter charge has been laid against an Abbotsford man in relation to the deadly fire at the Peardonville encampment on Friday (Apr. 24).

At around 6:09 p.m., AbbyPD patrol officers responded to the scene in the 31500 block of South Fraser Way and found the deceased in a wooden structure that had been set ablaze.

One man was arrested after initial police findings showed a suspected homicide.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) then took over the case, and the following day, on April 25, B.C. prosecutors laid one count of manslaughter against 49-year-old Ryan Easton in relation to the 47-year-old victim’s death.

Investigators believe the incident was isolated, as both men knew each other.

“Thanks to the swift response of the Abbotsford Police and the subsequent teamwork with IHIT investigators, we submitted evidence to the BCPS which led to charges being laid within 24-hours of the incident,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “IHIT extends its condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
