**UPDATE Friday at 9:45 a.m.: IHIT has identified the victims of Wednesday’s shooting on Chilliwack Lake Road as 58-year old John Kavaloff and 67-year old Valerie Smith of Chilliwack, in hopes of advancing the investigation. Robert Freeman, 83, of Chilliwack has been charged with 2 counts of second-degree murder.**

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack RCMP says Mounties are on scene of a double homicide at a residence in the 46000 block of Chilliwack Lake Road.

According to a news release from Corporal Carmen Kiener of the Chilliwack RCMP, at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, the Chilliwack RCMP responded to a report of shots fired in the 46000 block of Chilliwack Lake Road. Upon arrival, two deceased individuals were located in a nearby residence. A suspect was identified and taken into custody at the scene and there is no risk to public safety, Cpl. Kiener said in her statement.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called and will be working in partnership with Chilliwack RCMP.

Police are currently in the evidence gathering phase; no further information will be provided at this time. Further details and media availability will be handled by the IHIT media relations officer.

Fraser Valley Today visited a mobile home park east of Chilliwack Thursday morning at around 9:30 a.m. and saw two, possibly three, RCMP cruisers, a forensics vehicle and yellow tape blocking access to a mobile home. Their presence may be connected to Wednesday night’s incident.
