Cheam Leisure Centre in Chilliwack expands operating hours

CHILLIWACK — Nearly a year after YMCA BC replaced Recreation Excellence as the operator of two recreation sites owned by the city of Chilliwack, the Cheam Leisure Centre announced on Facebook this past week it will be open even more hours to the public.

Starting Tuesday, September 5, Cheam Leisure Centre will be open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

On top of the expanded hours, the YMCA welcomed back 12 more lifeguards at the beginning of summer, hired some lifeguards around the beginning of August, and plans to hire additional personnel to bolster aquatics programs at the Cheam Leisure Centre.

The additional hours reflects an ongoing pattern by the YMCA of incrementally adding more hours over the past year at the rec centre in Garrison.

Back in March 2023, Cheam Leisure Centre increased its operating hours by being open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, starting March 20.

Previously, the Cheam Leisure Centre had been open Mondays and Tuesdays 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursdays 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. (no change); Fridays 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sundays 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre updated their hours back in March to open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, starting March 20 as well.

The Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre was previously open Mondays to Thursdays 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (weight room only).
