YOUR PERSPECTIVE: Communities rally together to support firefighters and evacuees

Aug 23, 2023 | 8:00 AM

The past week has been incredibly difficult for many communities dealing with unprecedented wildfire activity. The hearts of all B.C. residents are with those who are worried about their future and the state of their homes and livelihoods.

Having your property put on evacuation order or alert is incredibly stressful. These decisions are not made lightly – they are issued by local governments and First Nations, on the advice and recommendation of the BC Wildfire Service and local First Nations – to keep people safe. Orders and alerts can come suddenly, so please be prepared with a ‘go bag’ containing all your family’s essential items.

Despite the losses and uncertainty, I have been heartened by the stories of those stepping up to help evacuees and firefighters. We hear about people opening up their homes to those in need, individuals donating to relief efforts for hard-hit communities, and volunteers organizing food and other supplies for our weary fire crews. It’s been amazing to see firefighters from across the globe offer their help, with some noting B.C. has offered the same support in their times of need.

We are all in this together. Thank you for being good neighbours to those who really need your support right now.
