CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack RCMP announced Tuesday night (Dec. 13) at 10:05 p.m. that the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been deployed following a shooting in the 9700 block of Windsor Street in Chilliwack.

According to a news release from RCMP Sgt. Krista Vrolyk, Chilliwack RCMP were dispatched to a report of gun shots at a residence in the 9700 block of Windsor Street in Chilliwack.

Front-line officers responded to the scene and located an unresponsive man suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was transported to hospital where he died from his injuries, Sgt. Vrolyk stated.

IHIT has been deployed and will be working in partnership with Chilliwack RCMP. Investigators are still in the initial evidence-gathering phase of this investigation.

“At this stage, this appears to be a targeted incident and it is not believed that there is a threat to the public at this time,” Sgt. Vrolyk indicated.

Investigators are working to determine whether this death has any links to the Lower Mainland gang conflict. Further updates and details regarding this investigation will be provided by IHIT.

According to a neighbour who lives on Windsor Street, the shooting happened sometime around 6 p.m. Tuesday evening. The neighbour, who did not offer his name, said he was in his bathroom when he heard the distinct sound of three to four gun shots.

Multiple RCMP units immediately responded to the 9700 block of Windsor Street and blocked off the surrounding streets, including Yale Road and Menzies Street, the neighbour indicated.

When asked who inhabited the residence, the neighbour described the couple as a male and female in their 30s and suspected narcotics were being sold. He said he could hear what he called excessive “racket” at 4 a.m. coming from the house one recent morning, and reported that the landlord had been trying to evict the younger couple.

The neighbour said immediately following the gunshots that he heard, there were no vehicles or individuals that fled the scene. He said a red Pontiac vehicle belonged to the home, but a second vehicle, a truck, was not necessarily associated with the residence where the alleged shooting occurred. The red Pontiac-type vehicle could still be seen in front of the home Tuesday night.

Yellow caution tape could be seen surrounding the property at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday evening. At that point in the evening, traffic was allowed to drive northbound and southbound on Windsor Street.
