Rural Chilliwack fire departments collect staggering amounts of donated food this week for the Salvation Army

CHILLIWACK — Firefighters with two rural Chilliwack fire departments went the extra mile this week by collecting food for those who could use a little help this Christmas and holiday season.

In doing so, the volunteers came to realize just how generous Chilliwack residents are when others are in need.

The Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department announced on Facebook this week that it received 49 boxes of food and $580 in cash donations.

“Last night our crews were out in full force collecting canned food for the Salvation Army Food Bank,” the Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department wrote Wednesday night (Dec. 7). “We’d like to give a huge thanks to our amazing community for supporting such a great cause. In just over two hours we were able to collect 49 boxes of food and other items to help those in need. We also received $580 in cash donations. Thanks to all the residents of the CRV who helped out, we appreciate the support.”

The Popkum Fire Department posted on Facebook Tuesday evening (Dec. 6) that it collected 7,500 food items and $7,827.50 for the Salvation Army.

“Another amazing night for our small community!” Popkum Fire Department wrote. “We collected 7,500 items and $7,827.50. Combined, this is equivalent to just short of 31,000 items. Popkum proud!”
