Fraser Valley small flock poultry operators encouraged to attend final avian flu information session
CHILLIWACK — Small flock farmers in the Fraser Valley’s poultry industry are being encouraged to participate in a virtual information session this evening (Dec. 5) on the topic of Avian Influenza.
The session will be led by B.C. government veterinary specialists. The topics will include improving flock or farm biosecurity against disease outbreaks, recognizing the signs of avian influenza in a flock, what to expect if a flock is determined to have avian flu, and how foreign disease regulations affect small-flock poultry.
The session will also identify the resources available for non-commercial bird owners, including diagnostic services through the B.C. Animal Health Centre.
Since the first confirmed case of avian influenza in B.C. poultry in mid-April 2022, there have been more than 60 cases in B.C., and more than 45 since the fall bird migration began in September. Since Nov. 16, there have been more than 30 cases.
