1 dead, 4 injured in multi-vehicle Highway 1 crash between Hope and Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — Police are now investigating a fatal two-car collision on Highway 1 between Hope and Chilliwack.

On October 30, at 6:50 p.m., first responders and officers from Hope, Agassiz, Chilliwack and BC Highway Patrol were paged out to a collision involving a white Hyundai SUV and a black Hyundai sedan in the 56000 block westbound lanes of Highway 1, near Laidlaw.

A 29-year-old Mission woman who was a passenger died on scene.

A 65-year-old Agassiz man was airlifted to hospital in serious condition, and three others were taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

“Sadly this incident has had a very tragic outcome, our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.” Says S/Sgt Mike Sargent of the Hope RCMP.

BC Highway Patrol has since taken over the investigation, as criminality could not be ruled out from the crash.

“Hope and Agassiz RCMP got to the scene immediately, but BC Highway Patrol has now taken conduct because we cannot rule out a criminal cause for this crash,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “We will need to investigate thoroughly, gather dash camera video, and speak to more witnesses to get a conclusive idea of what happened.”
