ABBOTSFORD — High school football players from W.J. Mouat Secondary will get to play on fresh turf this weekend in the much-awaited reopening of Latham Field.

The field has been closed since September 2021 due to end-of-life wear, but the City and Board of Education reestablished a joint-use agreement in April last year to maintain the four synthetic turf fields on the school district’s property.

“As a Council, we value sport, recreation and active living and the vitality and connection they create in our community,” said Abbotsford Mayor Ross Siemens.

“The reopening of the Latham Field at W. J. Mouat Secondary will benefit student athletes and community sports groups for years to come and is a great example of how partnership can create lasting benefits for everyone in Abbotsford.”

A special ceremony will also be held between Mouat, Colleen & Gordie Howe Middle School and Matsqui Recreation Centre to rename the other three fields in honour of sports-minded community figures in Abbotsford.

“The games, gatherings, and celebrations that will take place on Latham Field and the surrounding fields represent the heart of our community,” said Shirley Wilson, Chair of the Abbotsford Board of Education.

Other improvements included field drainage repairs, boot brush replacements, and fencing upgrades.

Residents are invited to celebrate the grand reopening at the Mouat Hawks game at 5:30 p.m. this Friday, September 26.
