LANGLEY — Hundreds of affordable homes have started to break ground in the Township of Langley after a fast-tracked program with the B.C. government.

In the Aldergrove community at 272nd Street and Fraser Highway, construction has begun on a 128-unit building with rooftop gathering space and ground-floor commercial area hosting non-profit organizations and a new library.

The same rooftop amenity space will also be up at the 118-unit Willoughby site at 20230 72B Ave., next to the firehall. BC Builds touts easy access to transit in both locations.

“These homes are for the people who keep our communities running – teachers, tradespeople, health-care workers and others, so they have a place to live close to their jobs, communities and loved ones,” said Christine Boyle, minister of housing and municipal affairs.

“We’re working together with municipalities to build homes people need, and we’re doing it faster than ever.”

Langley Township provided land for both developments, and the BC Builds program expedites housing by cutting red tape and offering low-interest loans on underutilized land, with projects being moved from blueprint to brownfield within 18 months.

“The Township of Langley residents have made it clear, housing that meets the needs of working families, seniors and individuals is a top priority,” said Township Mayor Eric Woodward. “These projects reflect our commitment to affordability and livability and show how quickly progress can happen with the right partnerships in place.”

All residents will undergo income testing at move-in to ensure their affordability aligns with local standards. Roughly 20 to 30 per cent of the homes are set to be offered at below-market rent.

The Willoughby and Aldergrove sites are expected to be ready by summer and fall 2027, respectively. These projects are part of a $19 billion housing commitment from the province since 2024.
