1 seriously injured after head-on collision with semi near Yale

YALE — A portion of Highway 1 has been blocked off this morning (Sep. 5) after a head-on collision in the Fraser Canyon.

Scanner traffic reported a massive accident on the highway involving multiple vehicles and a semi-truck on fire just after 6 a.m.

BC Highway Patrol says a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck collided, leaving the truck driver seriously injured.

Two ambulances with primary care paramedics and an ambulance with advanced care paramedics responded to the scene at about 6:22 a.m.

The driver has since been taken to hospital. The semi driver is unhurt.

“We are making progress in this investigation, but we need more witnesses and dash camera video to get a complete picture of what happened,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol.

“It’s also critical that drivers are as patient as possible despite multiple highway closures in the area. We understand that major highway shutdowns cause major inconvenience, but we don’t want anyone else to get hurt.”

At 7 a.m., DriveBC shared reports of an incident roughly two kilometres south of Yale.

As of 7:53 a.m., a 2.9-kilometre stretch of the road was closed in both directions between Emory Creek Campground and Princess Street. Assessment is in progress with no detour in place.

The unit responsible for supporting investigations of crashes that lead to serious injury or death has been deployed.

Corporal Dave Noon, a forensic collision reconstructionist with the Lower Mainland ICARS, asked drivers to expect significant delays for several hours with no anticipated time for reopening.

Highway 1 has since opened to single-lane alternating traffic as of 12:48 p.m.
