UPDATE: Fraser Health responds after Abbotsford MLA says FHA should step up to help senior displaced by fire

UPDATE, 6:08 P.M. TUESDAY: Fraser Health spokesperson Amory Wong has released a statement clarifying the health authority’s role as it relates to an Abbotsford senior who requires housing but has been placed at Mission Memorial Hospital.

“It is important to clarify that Fraser Health does not fund or operate independent living facilities in the region,” Wong said. “Chartwell Carrington House is a private, for-profit independent living facility that is not under contract with Fraser Health. Generally speaking, if a person’s care needs change and independent living is no longer the right fit for them, we work with them and their loved ones to understand their needs and connect them with the most appropriate level of care and support.”
Wong said when a person is eligible for publicly funded long-term care, the individual’s care team works alongside them and their family to identify suitable care homes in their preferred area or region that can best their needs.

“A person or their family may consider accepting temporary placement in a long-term care home in Fraser Health that has space available while waiting for a spot in one of their three preferred care homes. While we will not share details about this individual person, we can share that Fraser Health is in ongoing contact with them and their family to continue to provide support, care and answer their questions about next steps. We encourage the person and their family to reach out directly to the care team if they have questions or concerns.”

ABBOTSFORD/MISSION – Abbotsford South MLA Bruce Banman is faulting Fraser Health for what he says is their inability to find suitable housing for a local senior after a fire at Chartwell Carrington in Mission earlier this year displaced him and many others.

Banman says Fraser Health needs to take urgent action to ensure that residents of Chartwell have appropriate, long-term care placements.

The fire at Chartwell Carrington House in March 2026 forced residents to evacuate and find alternate housing in temporary accommodations. However, since some of those temporary arrangements are now ending, residents are being left without options. He claims Fraser Health is not stepping up to find appropriate placements for these local seniors.

“I have heard from a constituent about what has happened to his father after he had to leave Chartwell Carrington House, and the way that Fraser Health has handled the situation is completely unacceptable,” said Banman. “The health authority abdicated its responsibility to provide housing support, with no plan in place for a long-term solution. It is time for Fraser Health to step up.”

Banman says Ed Jamieson was temporarily placed in Chartwell Crescent Gardens. When Chartwell could no longer accommodate him, he was transferred to Mission Memorial Hospital where he currently remains with no timeline for permanent placement. His care has already been twice delayed by incorrect assessments from Fraser Health. And while his family has tirelessly advocated for him, Banman says they have been left in the dark about what happens next.

“I am calling on the Minister of Health to look into this case and ensure that swift action is taken to provide the patient with an appropriate long-term care placement,” said Banman. “British Columbians deserve better than a healthcare system that leaves vulnerable people in limbo. We need a healthcare system that actually delivers.”

Fraser Valley Today is awaiting a response from a Fraser Health spokesperson on this issue.
