Armed Zimbabwean man sentenced for smuggling drugs across U.S. border southeast of Hope, B.C.
NORTH CASCADES NATIONAL PARK – An armed Zimbabwean citizen who crossed illegally between an area southeast of Hope, B.C. and Western Washington on two occasions with the intent to distribute narcotics has been sentenced.
According to a social media update from U.S. Customs and Border Protection Chief Patrol Agent Rosario Pete Vasquez, 30-year-old Zimbabwean national Tatenda Banga was sentenced on August 14, 2025 to 18 months in prison and three years of supervised release.
“Great job by everyone involved,” CPA Vasquez said.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Washington said Banga was observed twice in 2024 on surveillance cameras near Hozomeen, Washington, south of Ross Lake in the North Cascades. Banga, who crossed illegally from Canada into Washington state, pleaded guilty on March 13, 2025 to being an unlawful alien in possession of firearms and possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute.
