New football program in Chilliwack

New high school football program coming to Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — Two Chilliwack football coaches who played together nearly 30 years ago in the Canadian Junior Football League are eager to get a new high school football program in Chilliwack off the ground.

Chilliwack Secondary School has officially announced the launch of the CSS Storm football program, with a junior varsity team debuting in 2026 and a varsity program beginning the following year in 2027.

The creation of the Storm is a major milestone for both the school and the city, further expanding Chilliwack’s strong football footprint, according to a news release from local football coach Ryk Piché.

At the helm of the program is head coach and general manager, Clint Currie. As a lifelong student of the game, Currie brings over 30 years of football experience as both a player and a coach. His playing career hit a peak with the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees where he won the 2000 Vanier Cup national championship.

Closer to home, Currie has been a pioneer for football in Chilliwack for decades. He was one of the original members of the Chilliwack Greyhawks (1992) and part of the inaugural Valley Huskers team in 1999 — the very program his family helped establish. With over 17 years on the sidelines, he has guided teams to six championship appearances across multiple levels, always emphasizing discipline, teamwork, and character.

“I’m honoured to return to CSS and help build a program that will serve the community for years to come,” said Currie. “We want to create an environment where players develop not only as athletes but also as leaders.”

Joining him as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator is Ryk Piché, a veteran coach with experience spanning high school, junior, and even professional football. In 2025, Piché was invited to work with the Saskatchewan Roughriders as a guest coach, gaining valuable insight into the CFL. His coaching résumé includes two AAA provincial championships at Centennial Secondary, multiple provincial finals appearances at Langley Secondary and G.W. Graham, and recent contributions as special teams coordinator for the Valley Huskers.

“Football has the power to change lives,” said Piché. “Our goal with the Storm is to build a culture where athletes grow, compete, and dream big — both on and off the field.”

Notably, Currie and Piché share a deep bond, having played together nearly three decades ago with the Tri-City Bulldogs of the Canadian Junior Football League.

Rounding out the coaching staff roster is Brandt Davies, who will serve as the junior varsity receivers coach. A CSS alumnus, Davies grew up in Chilliwack, playing with the Chilliwack Giants before suiting up for the Valley Huskers as both a quarterback and receiver. He has since transitioned into coaching, most recently working with the Huskers and the CSS basketball program.

“Football has always been a part of my life here in Chilliwack,” said Davies. “To come full circle and help bring the game back to CSS is something really special.”

Piché says the advent of the CSS Storm represents not just a new football team, but an investment in youth, community, and tradition. With experienced coaches, deep local roots, and a clear vision for the future, the program is set to provide Chilliwack athletes with opportunities to compete at the highest levels of high school football in B.C.
