Update: Abbotsford PD says it will meet with the province about future closures of Highway 1 and proper notification
UPDATE, 8:30 A.M. MONDAY: Abbotsford PD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker says message boards on Highway 1 about the closure did not adequately notify the public about the eastbound closure at the Mt. Lehman Road exit Sunday night, saying many people were simply not aware of the closure in advance.
“The overnight closure of Highway 1 eastbound at Mt. Lehman Road caused significant frustration for motorists due to limited advance public communication. The closure was coordinated by the Province as part of the Highway 1 expansion project. We will be meeting with the province this week to ensure improved communication for future closures,” Sgt. Walker said.
In response to police notifying the public about the closure, multiple people reported on the AbbyPD’s Facebook page that they were stuck in traffic for several hours. They questioned why this closure was done on the same weekend that FIFA World Cup festivities had kicked off in Vancouver.
Other people defended the message boards online, saying the message boards had reminded drivers about the closures. However, not everyone saw those signs.
