Update: Abbotsford PD says it will meet with the province about future closures of Highway 1 and proper notification

UPDATE, 8:30 A.M. MONDAY: Abbotsford PD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker says message boards on Highway 1 about the closure did not adequately notify the public about the eastbound closure at the Mt. Lehman Road exit Sunday night, saying many people were simply not aware of the closure in advance.

“The overnight closure of Highway 1 eastbound at Mt. Lehman Road caused significant frustration for motorists due to limited advance public communication. The closure was coordinated by the Province as part of the Highway 1 expansion project. We will be meeting with the province this week to ensure improved communication for future closures,” Sgt. Walker said.

In response to police notifying the public about the closure, multiple people reported on the AbbyPD’s Facebook page that they were stuck in traffic for several hours. They questioned why this closure was done on the same weekend that FIFA World Cup festivities had kicked off in Vancouver.

Other people defended the message boards online, saying the message boards had reminded drivers about the closures. However, not everyone saw those signs.

When the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit has conducted overnight closures of Highway 1 or off-ramps and on-ramps, or traffic pattern changes, as part of ongoing road construction procedures in the Fraser Valley, it has notified media outlets throughout the province about the planned closures. This time, that did not occur.

Original story:

ABBOTSFORD – With no prior advance notice sent to the news media, Highway 1 eastbound traffic through Abbotsford Sunday night was rerouted to road construction.

Abbotsford PD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker says there is a highway detour in effect Sunday night at the Mt. Lehman Road off-ramp (Exit 83).

“Highway 1 eastbound at Mt. Lehman Road is currently closed due to overnight construction related to the Highway 1 expansion project,” Sgt. Walker said.

Traffic is being diverted off at Mt. Lehman Road southbound, then redirected east onto Fraser Highway and back onto Highway 1 via the eastbound on-ramp at Fraser Highway.

Motorists should expect heavy congestion on Highway 1 west of Mt. Lehman Road, Sgt. Walker said.

Drivers are encouraged to consider alternate routes. The closure will remain in place until 5:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15.

DriveBC only posted about the highway closure at 9:35 p.m. Sunday night. The closure went into effect at 7 p.m., Sgt. Walker said, meaning the province decided to notify the public two and a half hours after the highway was closed e/b at Mt. Lehman (Exit 83).
