Upper Fraser Valley RCMP to ramp up presence over August long weekend

Aug 1, 2025 | 8:33 AM

CHILLIWACK — Police in the Upper Fraser Valley are gearing up for the long weekend as residents head out to celebrate BC Day.

The RCMP will have an increased presence in areas where travel and community events are expected, including parks, campgrounds and the backcountry.

Officers will also be looking out for impaired drivers, property crime and disruptive behaviour in various neighbourhoods and commercial areas.

“The August long weekend is a time for celebration, but it’s also when we see a spike in preventable incidents,” said Inspector Harinder Kheleh with the Chilliwack RCMP.

“Our focus is on helping everyone enjoy the weekend safely, whether they’re at home, on the road, or exploring the outdoors.”

Travellers are urged to keep a couple of safety tips in mind this weekend, such as:

  • Planning ahead by expecting delays and checking pre-trip road conditions.
  • Not driving impaired.
  • Locking cars, homes and cabins, as well as keeping valuables out of sight.
  • Following fire bans and packing out garbage.
  • Monitoring BC Wildfire for any changes and local fire restrictions.

Anyone who witnesses concerning incidents is asked to report to their local RCMP or call 9-1-1 in an emergency.
