ABBOTSFORD — B.C.’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation of the death of one person and the hospitalization of another person from Menno Home in Abbotsford.

The Abbotsford Police Department’s Major Crime Unit (MCU) has been investigating the incident in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and medical professionals since being initially notified on July 6.

That’s when the Abbotsford Regional Hospital alerted investigators to two patients who had been transferred into the hospital from Menno Home. Both were suffering from medical emergencies that were suspicious to hospital staff. One of the two passed away on July 10.

IHIT investigators are gathering evidence, reviewing CCTV footage, conducting interviews and speaking with medical professionals to advance the investigation.

“Understandably, this has raised concerns, especially for those living in care homes and for families of residents,” says Cpl. Sukhi Dhesi of IHIT. “We recognize there are many questions, and I can assure you that IHIT is actively working to advance the investigation and find answers.”

A news release from Abbotsford Police last week stated Menno Home had implemented additional safeguards to protect the well-being of the residents.

Menno Home provides care to all levels of seniors. According to its website, up to 700 seniors are living at the facility.

IHIT is asking anyone who may have information regarding the incident to contact investigators through the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448).
