CHILLIWACK — It’s no secret that animal shelters across British Columbia, even right here in Chilliwack, are overflowing with unwanted dogs and cats.

Which is why the province’s first non-profit mobile vet clinic has expanded its service platform to now include Chilliwack, Abbotsford and the rest of the Fraser Valley.

Mission Pawsible, which touts itself as B.C.’s first non-profit mobile vet clinic, says it is working to make essential veterinary services attainable for everyone. They’ve teamed up with Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven to make preventative healthcare, like vaccines and spaying/neutering, accessible to everyone.

“Mission Pawsible’s small vet team did over 1,000 non-profit spay & neuter surgeries on and around Vancouver Island in our first year of operation. After making a few adjustments, our team is now able to provide our essential vet services, like low-cost spay & neuter surgeries in the Fraser Valley, thanks to a new partnership with Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven,” said James Rodgers, Mission Pawsible’s executive director.

Mission Pawsible says volunteers are available to help transport pets to and from their surgery appointment in the event that transportation is a barrier.

Having a parking spot for one of the Mission Pawsible vetmobiles at the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven shelter facility will also be a boon for communities beyond the Fraser Valley that are interested in accessing low cost veterinary services.

“Our stellar, mobile vet team is all about getting vet services, especially those that have a direct impact on community safety like spay & neuter surgeries, to chronically underserved communities. With a base in Chilliwack, we can now also get to more of those communities along the Fraser Highway and beyond,” Rodgers said.

Mission Pawsible’s costs vary based on a number of factors, including travel time and distances but when parked at Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven, the team is aiming to offer spays and neuters for cats, including vaccines, microchipping and flea, tick and worm treatments for $160. Dog spay and neuter costs range widely (based on size, age, gender, etc.) but will start around $300.

From time to time, Mission Pawsible receives donations or is able to access grants to further subsidize the cost of their services for those most in need.
