Abbotsford firefighters battle massive structure fire on Sumas Mountain

ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford firefighters battled a massive structure fire on Sumas Mountain Tuesday afternoon that was eventually contained over two hours later.

According to online statements posted by both the city and Abbotsford PD, multiple first responders were dispatched sometime around 5 p.m. for a large working structure fire on Sumas Mountain Road between Dawson Road and Foxglove Lane.

No injuries were reported as of 5:05 p.m. Tuesday evening. Sumas Mountain Road was closed in both directions due to the presence of first responders.

A helicopter was brought in to assist the working fire on Sumas Mt. Low-level flights occurred in the area.

As of 7:29 p.m., the City of Abbotsford announced that the fire had been contained. Crews were working with the support of an excavator and worked to wet the ground at the scene. Thermal imaging was utilized to ensure all hot spots were thoroughly extinguished and could not rekindle.

City personnel say crews will remain on site Tuesday evening.
