CHILLIWACK — A Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson has confirmed that a motorist struck a utility pole and road sign Saturday night in Greendale and fled the scene.

According to scanner traffic, Chilliwack Fire Department Engines 1, 3, 4 and 6 were dispatched at about 11:05 p.m. Saturday night for the report of a vehicle versus telephone pole.

One resident told Fraser Valley Today the accident happened on Yale Road east of Sumas Prairie Road.

A witness wrote on social media that multiple Chilliwack RCMP units flooded the area where the accident occurred.

“Tons of cops all spread out right now, seen 5 or 6 all spread out in different areas blocking roads,” Tristan Metcalfe wrote on Facebook.

Another Facebook commenter who lives in the Greendale area said the collision took out a road sign.

Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener confirmed that police attended Saturday night.

“I can confirm that we did respond to a collision as you described. We suspect the driver took off on foot,” Cpl. Kiener said. “Police did not locate the driver, even though efforts were exhausted.”

Cpl. Kiener says the investigation is ongoing to determine the identity of the driver and what if any charges are applicable.

A Greendale resident told Fraser Valley Today that police were set up and parked on multiple roads north of the accident scene, including Highway 1, looking for the driver. At one point, RCMP cruisers used their vehicle spotlights to look for the driver. The area was block off from through traffic.
