Motorist takes out utility pole Monday, tries to flee crash scene
MISSION — Mounties in Mission say a 33-year-old Mission man exhibited signs of impairment after the SUV he was driving Monday morning left Dewdney Trunk Road and crashed into a utility pole.
According to a statement from police, Mounties were dispatched just before 10 a.m. Monday morning (Dec. 16) for the report of a single-vehicle crash on Dewdney Trunk Road just north of Keystone Avenue. Police say a black Toyota 4Runner veered off the road and crashed through a utility pole, before coming to rest in some roadside bushes.
Police report that an off-duty paramedic and firefighter were first on scene, but they could not approach the vehicle as a long section of power lines had been pulled down due to the broken pole, and the lines were in close proximity to the vehicle. The area also experienced a power outage because of the collision.
The sole occupant – a 33-year-old from Mission – did not remain on scene after the crash. A police dog was utilized and led officers to an abandoned structure nearby where the man was located inside. The man demonstrated symptoms of impairment. However, police say because he was transported to hospital with minor injuries, he was unable to comply with providing breath samples. Officers instead issued a blood demand in order to obtain and analyze his blood for evidence to confirm whether he was driving while impaired.
