CHILLIWACK — The BC NDP has released a statement announcing the death of former Chilliwack MLA Dan Coulter. According to party insiders, Coulter passed away this week in hospital following a sudden medical incident recently.

The statement says Coulter was a dedicated advocate for inclusivity, justice, and community progress.

Coulter’s career was marked by a commitment to championing those often overlooked. As the past Chair of the Chilliwack School Board, President of CUPE 3787, and later as the Parliamentary Secretary for Accessibility and Minister of State for Infrastructure and Transit, he fought to create a fairer province where everyone could thrive regardless of their abilities or circumstances.

Coulter’s impact extended beyond politics; he was deeply cherished by those who knew him personally.

“Dan was more than a colleague — he was a mentor, a friend, and an extraordinary advocate for his community,” the BC NDP said in a statement. “He was smart, funny, thoughtful, and above all, kind. He was the very best of us.”

The Chilliwack Teachers Association (CTA) released a statement on Coulter’s passing. “Dan’s legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and a vision for a better future for all,” said the CTA President Reid Clark. “His tireless advocacy has left an indelible mark on our community, and we are profoundly grateful for his years of service on the school board and in the legislature.”

A private service will take place Saturday, with a public service planned for January 11 in Chilliwack. The family has requested donations to the Chilliwack Restorative Justice and Youth Advocacy Association, Chilliwack Bowls of Hope Society, and the BC SPCA in lieu of flowers.
