ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker says a female has died after being hit by a train Wednesday evening near Lefeuvre Road and River Road, northwest of Abbotsford.

Sgt. Walker says AbbyPD received a call at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday for the report of a train collision.

“I can confirm we’re currently on scene of a pedestrian versus train collision,” Sgt. Walker said. “Sadly, the pedestrian did not survive.”

The rail crossing at Lefeuvre and River was blocked to vehicle traffic while the police investigation occurred. The stopped train had been blocking the road, Sgt. Walker said.

Since next of kin notification had not yet occurred as of 8 p.m. Wednesday night, police were limited in what they could release to the media, and rightfully so.

A Chilliwack resident, Hailey VanBasten, sent Fraser Valley Today a picture and video of the aftermath of the incident where the train was stopped, accompanied by a BC Ambulance Service unit.

“Police, fire, BCHES and CN Police are currently on scene,” VanBasten told Fraser Valley Today via Facebook Messenger. “Unsure if it’s a fatality or if the person has survived. Police stated that the crossings will be closed for a a few hours yet.”
