CHILLIWACK — Two nurses from Chilliwack have been disciplined by the B.C. College of Nurses & Midwives for failing to uphold certain professional standards.

On August 9, a panel of the Inquiry Committee, affiliated with the B.C. College of Nurses & Midwives, approved a consent agreement between the College and Jennifer Kanoga of Chilliwack to address practice issues that previously occurred in November 2023. Those practice issues were related to what the College called “failing to follow the independent double check and discrepancy resolution processes” for high-alert medication on two occasions.

The College said Kanoga, a registered practical nurse, has voluntarily agreed to terms that limit their practice, including a suspension of their nursing registration for three weeks; and, for a period of six months, a limit restricting them from being the nurse in charge, working overtime, and independently handling, administering, wasting or resolving discrepancies connected to high-alert medications, except under direct supervision; remedial education related to medications, ethics and professional responsibility; and developing a learning plan, which will be shared with their employer and with BCCNM.

The Inquiry Committee of the College wrote on its website that it is satisfied these terms will protect the public.

Earlier this summer on July 24, 2024, a panel of the Inquiry Committee approved a consent agreement between BCCNM and Leah Wilson, a registered nurse from Chilliwack, to remediate practice issues that occurred from April to August 2023. The College determined that Wilson did not adhere to medication administration practices, did not ensure their documentation was accurate, or did not ensure documentation at all. An audit conducted by the employer revealed transactions for medications could not be accounted for, medication records had not been signed for, and required pain scales had not been fully completed.

The College said on its website that the registrant, Leah Wilson, voluntarily agreed to terms equivalent to a limit and/or condition on their practice, including a two-month suspension of their registration; remaining with the same employer for a term; direct supervision over narcotics, benzodiazepines, controlled substances, and the “zed” class of drugs for a term; indirect supervision over narcotics, benzodiazepines, controlled substances, and the “zed” class of drugs for a term; and a limit that they not work overtime, work night shifts, act as the nurse-in-charge, have supervision over students, or be involved in orientation of new staff for a term.

The Inquiry Committee of BCCNM says it is satisfied that the terms of the consent agreement will safeguard the public.
