YOUR PERSPECTIVE: NDP continues to punish everyday British Columbians

May 15, 2024 | 8:00 AM

Despite significant healthcare challenges, B.C. remains the only jurisdiction in Canada to enforce the vaccine mandate for healthcare professionals.

At a time when one in five British Columbians do not have access to a family doctor, B.C.’s walk-in wait times are the worst in the entire country, and ER closures plague our province, we need all hands-on deck.

These are individuals who could be greatly contribute to B.C.’s rapidly deteriorating healthcare system, and get people the timely access to healthcare they deserve. No other province is still preventing them from working, except British Columbia.

The NDP’s pandemic response has sparked considerable debate due to inconsistencies and contentious decisions. One of the most striking examples is the government’s focus on prosecuting churches for violating COVID-19 restrictions four years ago. This aggressive legal stance contrasts sharply with the leniency shown towards secular activities, such as Pilates classes, which were granted accommodations at the same time.

Three years ago, our BC United Caucus addressed these concerns through a letter to the then Attorney General, now Premier, David Eby. We pointed out the stark contrast in the enforcement against religious gatherings as opposed to secular activities, yet the NDP continues to back this position. David Eby has even allocated significant resources toward legal action, utilizing numerous applications, and enlisting multiple lawyers. All while our justice system is struggling under the weight countless repeat violent offenders every single day due to David Eby’s catch-and-release policies.

Eby’s catch-and-release justice system allows violent criminals to commit dozens, even hundreds of crimes with hardly any punishment. It’s appalling to see the NDP attempt to justify their punitive approach and reckless spending of taxpayer dollars against religious institutions while they allow prolific offenders to continually walk free.

British Columbians are rightfully concerned about their safety and the priorities of this government. The NDP’s efforts are misdirected, focusing on punitive measures against non-violent groups and unvaccinated healthcare staff while failing to address the broader issues of public safety and a healthcare system in crisis. These gatherings helped British Columbians feel less isolated from their communities, yet they continue to be punished for it.

After seven years of neglect from this NDP government, enough is enough.

Under a BC United government, we will prioritize the rights of law-abiding citizens over those that choose to repeatedly re-offend and recognize the urgency facing B.C.’s healthcare system by removing the vaccine mandate for all healthcare professionals just as every other province has done.

By reassessing our priorities and focusing on genuine solutions, we aim to restore British Columbians’ confidence in their government and ensure everyone feels safe in their communities.

United, we will fix it.
