CHILLIWACK — Personnel from the BC Conservation Officer Service have been notified about a bear that was seen climbing over a fence at Stitó:s Lá:lém Totí:lt elementary-middle school near the Vedder River on Monday morning, Thanksgiving Day.

According to a social media post from Chilliwack resident Lisa Wloch, a black bear was seen climbing over the fence at around 10 a.m. Monday morning.

That same bear was also seen Monday morning, October 9 just behind homes on Kokanee Lane in River’s Edge, a residential subdivision south of Keith Wilson Road not far from the Vedder River.

A Chilliwack resident indicated Tuesday morning (Oct. 10) on Facebook that she has since contacted the BC Conservation Officer Service about the bear’s actions at the school in order to avoid a negative encounter between humans and wildlife that could end badly.

Last month, a coyote had to be put down in Mission by the BC Conservation Officer Service after it reportedly bit nine people.

In July 2023, the BC Conservation Officer Service says it put down a cougar after reports that the animal reportedly ate a dog and displayed stalking behaviour towards people at a campground in Cultus Lake Provincial Park.
