CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack RCMP says a heavy police presence that surrounded a home in the 5700 block of Tyson Road Sunday night (Aug. 27) involved a person in crisis.

In a brief statement released Wednesday (Aug. 30) by Sgt. Krista Vrolyk, media relations spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP detachment, Mounties in Chilliwack responded to the report of a person in crisis on Tyson Road at roughly 7:30 p.m Sunday evening. The person in question was in possession of a weapon, Sgt. Vrolyk said.

Police attended, safely apprehended the individual and transported the person to hospital for medical care.

At least seven Chilliwack RCMP cruisers surrounded the home on Tyson Road Sunday night as officers abruptly converged on a home looking for an individual.

According to Chilliwack resident Stefeni Murphy, who was out on a 7-kilometre walk Sunday night on Tyson Road and was standing on the east side of the road near the incident, an RCMP SUV stopped abruptly in the middle of Tyson Road just south of the Sardis library and Sardis Sports Complex. Within minutes, Murphy said, several more RCMP responded to the scene with lights and sirens activated and parked on both sides of Tyson Road.

Murphy said she witnessed a multitude of officers rushing towards the home, with at least one officer urging someone inside the residence to come outside with their hands up. At least one officer had a flashlight in tow pointing it towards the house.

A couple from the residence stood outside the home and talked to RCMP personnel shortly after 7:45 p.m. They did not appear to be under arrest.

Minutes later, two RCMP officers emerged from the home accompanying a subject who had been detained. The subject appeared to be a Caucasian male standing between 5’8″ and 6 feet tall. He was placed into an RCMP cruiser.
