Excavator reportedly hits gas line near Commercial Court in Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — FortisBC and Chilliwack Fire Department personnel have been dispatched to Commercial Court near Eagle Landing Monday afternoon after an excavator reportedly hit a gas line at, or near, a construction site.

Three fire engines from Chilliwack Fire Department were dispatched to the 45000 block of Commercial Court, just west of Evans Parkway, after an excavator reportedly hit a gas line sometime after 12:30 p.m.

Some staff members of nearby businesses could be standing outside near the sidewalk of Commercial Court, as the fire department radioed dispatch to indicate an evacuation would be necessary.

Two FortisBC vans could be seen parked on the west side of Evans Parkway.

According to scanner traffic, Chilliwack firefighters radioed dispatch to say they would be on scene for quite a while Monday afternoon. They requested personnel to cover Hall No. 1 (45950 Cheam Avenue).

There is a Petro Canada gas station and car wash under construction at the corner of Evans Parkway and Commercial Court.

The entrance to the Concentrix parking lot on Evans Parkway was blocked by a Chilliwack fire engine as of 1:37 p.m.

According to scanner traffic at 2:10 p.m., FortisBC was able to isolate the gas line. Gas has been turned off.

Chilliwack firefighters have been clear of the scene as of 2:11 p.m.
