VANCOUVER — Environment Canada says the Fraser Valley will be subject to a prolonged heat wave, issuing a heat warning for the region.

The national weather agency says a strong ridge of high pressure is moving over the region this weekend and will remain in place through much of the week.

It says daytime temperatures are expected to reach 33 degrees throughout the Fraser Valley. Temperatures will remain warm overnight, dipping down to just 17.

The heatwave is expected to begin Sunday (Aug. 13) and continue through Thursday, with highs expected to reach 33 each day in Chilliwack and Abbotsford, nearly 10 degrees warmer than the seasonal average.

The warning covers a widespread area, from Howe Sound along the coast, through metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

The Canadian Red Cross says extreme heat can affect everyone. Young children, the elderly, those with chronic illnesses such as heart disease, and those taking certain medications can become ill in hot, humid weather faster than healthy adults.

It says to prevent a heat-related illness, you should drink plenty of cool fluids and avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day.

Wearing light, loose clothing allows the air to circulate around your skin while also allowing the heat to escape your body.

If you are outside, always wear a hot and reduce your exposure to the sun as much as possible. Taking a break in a cool shady area will help your body to cool off.
