BOSTON BAR — The provincial watchdog agency tasked with providing oversight of police in BC is investigating the death of a woman in Boston Bar.

According to a news release Tuesday from the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), the RCMP told IIO personnel that first responders were dispatched on April 2, 2023 for a fire at a residence on Highway 1, the Trans-Canada Highway, about seven kilometres north of Boston Bar. One woman was found dead at the residence.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred as police had responded to several calls for wellness checks during the week before the fire. The IIO investigation continues to investigate whether police actions or inactions played any role in the death.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
