CHILLIWACK — A media relations spokesperson for the Upper Fraser Fraser Valley Detachment in Chilliwack says alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in Saturday’s motor vehicle collision on Chilliwack Lake Road in which a motorcyclist fled the scene and was arrested approximately an hour later by Mounties.

Corporal Martin Godard, spokesperson for the RCMP, wrote in an email Wednesday (May 31) that a 22-year-old male was arrested in the early evening hours of Saturday, May 27 after leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision.

“Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the initial collision,” Cpl. Godard said.

The Chilliwack RCMP Municipal Traffic section has conduct of this active investigation, Cpl. Godard said.

No further details were released by Cpl. Godard, including whether the man was released or what his name is.

The 22-year-old was detained by Chilliwack RCMP officers Saturday afternoon after he caused an accident on Chilliwack Lake Road and fled the scene, only to be captured and arrested less than an hour later.

The Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department was dispatched Saturday (May 27) at approximately 4:45 p.m. for the report of a truck that had gone into a ditch on Chilliwack Lake Road, and a motorcyclist possibly responsible for that crash had left the scene.

Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department had taped off the truck, located near Auchenway Road and Chilliwack Lake Road, until RCMP officers were able to deal with it.

Not long after, Chilliwack first responders received information about an accident in the 45000 block of Vedder Mountain Road, not far from Qoqolem Park (45076 Vedder Mountain Road). First responders were dispatched to the area.

A Fraser Valley Today reporter drove by the scene and witnessed approximately six RCMP officers standing on the south side of Vedder Mountain Road near a Caucasian male who was handcuffed at 5:14 p.m. Saturday. The detained Caucasian male was about 21-25 years old, with light auburn or brown hair, and a slim build, with a height of about 5’9″. He appeared to be disheveled facing northbound as he stood handcuffed near an RCMP vehicle on the south side of the road. He wore jeans and a shirt that appeared to be dirty.

His motorcycle could be seen resting on the ground on the north side of Vedder Mountain Road.
